The updated Team Spirit series by Norwood House Press covers both National and American League teams. The author has added an emphasis on content that will be appreciated by true fans of baseball including a chapter on historical debates surrounding the teams and a look at souvenirs and memorabilia. Readers are also able to explore the history and key players for each team through content that is rich with photographs and graphics. Each book in the series contains the exact same chapters. This feature would make this series a great set of books for introducing students to non-fiction text features. It would also support a class research project.

Mark Stewart excels in another title of the Team Spirit: Baseball series. This particular one focuses on the Washington Nationals, the relatively new team of the nation’s capital. Stewart manages to provide a very comprehensive offering – given the intended audience— on the newest of MLB teams. He accomplishes so in part by delving into the team’s origins as the Montreal Expos. But it is Stewart’s expertise in the subject and his attention to detail that make this title shine. No subject appears to have escaped him: History of the team, successful years, a history of stadiums they have played in, notable players, uniforms, timelines, quotes, etc. He completes the book by including a fair amount of interesting facts and stats. As a baseball fan who grew up loving the sport, I think students will find everything they would like to know about the team and more in this title. An excellent addition for libraries that are looking to enrich their sports collection.
