Part of Margaret Hillert’s original “Fairy Tales and Folklore” series (originally published more than thirty years ago), this title brings readability to a well-known children’s fairy tale. Especially designed for beginning readers who are learning how text works and gaining experience with reading sight words, this little reader is an excellent practice book. Although the illustrations are original and therefore somewhat old-fashioned, they do reinforce the story and give young readers clues to help them read this book successfully. The limited text is made up of thirty-four sight words (which are, by the way, included in a list at the back of the book). There are also additional activities created by literacy consultant Shannon Cannon to expand children’s learning about the “th” blend. The vocabulary instruction seems a bit out of place for such young readers with its focus on comparatives and superlative word endings, but the fluency recommendation of turning this little book into a reader’s theater production is a good one. Dr. Cannon has also included questions to help the child recall the strong sequencing in this story, as well as story details.

Children's Literature

This is a good introduction to the classic story of the three little pigs. It has nice repetition which retains the feel of the original story. The target audience of P-2 is right on. It would be good to pair with nonfiction about house construction.

Erie 2 Chautaugua-Cattaraugus BOCES, 2011

This well-known tale has been adapted for the youngest of readers. The text is comprised entirely of sight words with enough repetition to allow for ample reading practice. The illustrations are reminiscent of Mother Goose tales. Sight words and reading reinforcements are included in the back of the back.
