Highly Recommended. This is from the Smart about Sports series. In this one, readers are introduced to the Boston Red Sox and learn about their history, facts, and fun information. The layout of this book is very inviting and has things for the reader to do as they are reading. I plan to look for the other books in this series for my young sports enthusiasts!

The easy to read text of each of the seven books of the series (Meet the Astros, Meet the Cardinals, Meet the Dodgers, Meet the Rays, Meet the Cubs, Meet the Red Sox, Meet the Yankees) will provide the young baseball fan with information about the teams, its players and its ballparks. Two-page spreads with pictures of baseball cards of some of the team's outstanding players, a map showing where some of its stars were born, its uniforms and record-holders are included. Two challenges for readers are included: a photograph challenging the reader to find how many things they see in the photograph starts with a particular letter, and a limerick followed by two facts only one of which is true. Four baseball terms are described, and index and a referral to the team's website are included. The series provides lower-level readers an opportunity to learn about the teams for information usually provided at high reading levels.

A series on major league baseball teams for the younger reader has definitely been needed and this one fits the bill. Although the information is very brief, readers will still find the book informative. There are photographs of the Yankee players and it even has a picture of the new Yankee stadium included. Recommended.
