Review
"Norwood House Press has updated and revised their iScience series. It now focuses on the use of scientific inquiry with each title connecting to the real world through puzzles, questions, and activities. In this particular title, fluent readers are introduced to the differences and similarities between insects and how to identify them through inquiry. With the use of diagrams, explanatory photographs, excellent organization of information, a glossary, and opportunities for further learning, these titles surpass the expectations of well-constructed nonfiction materials for young readers. Of particular note, these titles provide connections to everyday life, but also creates an inquiry approach to learning that many will find intriguing. This is a wonderful series that should be considered as a primary acquisition for an elementary library that seeks to update their collection." –Irving Independent School District

This 32-page primary science book introduces basic information about linear, solid-volume, and liquid-volume measurements in metric and English units, as well as temperature measurement in Celsius and Fahrenheit. Readers are presented with a “Measured Mystery” that asks them to imagine that it is their birthday. To find one of their presents, readers must follow a series of clues. Each clue includes something to measure. As children read the book, they will learn how to use measurement tools and how to think critically to solve a problem.

The authors use a problem-based learning scenario and questioning techniques that encourage science inquiry. The book includes an iScience Puzzle with an explanation of how to solve it, a discover activity, information about science at work, connections to history, a glossary, and further reading and additional notes. The illustrations are photographs. This is a high-quality durable book with a library binding—perfect for the classroom.

I highly recommend this book to teachers of grades K to 4. Upper-grade teachers with special education students as well as teachers using differentiated instruction will also find this book very useful. I love the problem-based learning scenarios presented in this series. As a teacher of 32 years, I found this method of teaching to be very effective in promoting critical thinking skills. I also found that using these strategies promotes student-generated research. http://www.nsta.org/recommends/ViewProduct.aspx?ProductID=20809.

Engaging book. Good visuals and appealing format. Reading level is appropriate (3-4). It would be great for remedial math activities. Contains a glossary, further reading, and notes at the end of the books.

This is a great series for beginning science introduction and study. Books are easy to manage both in size and amount of pages. Each book has a colorful cover wtih a round colorful picture of the subject. Inside it is packed with information with great photographs. Text is 2-3 paragraphs per page. There are additional features highlighting the topic and sub-topic headings. I like the science puzzle at the beginning - almost an ice breaker into the topic. The discovery activity is a great hands on example of the topic. Very nice series for the younger elementary.
