There are so many good features about this series. The highly visual layout of the Team Spirit books will be popular for upper elementary and middle school baseball fans. The books are divided into multiple short sections that are the same in each book. This could contribute to an effection lesson on text structure with different students exploring books from this series and looking at the features for comparison. The large photographs have good resolution, and layout is uncluttered and easy to follow. Special features like the timeline, fun facts, and Great Debates are well done. The "Talking Baseball" quotes could appeal to teachers looking for ways to help students interpret quotations. Map features provide an opportunity to expose students to U.S. and world geography. The glossary has icons that differentiate between sports vocabulary and other vocabulary. The lack of subheadings within most of the sections does create some large "chunks" of text that may be intimidating to some struggling readers, but if they are interested in the content, the text is written well and they may stick to it. This is a good update to the previous series, and the Extra Innings section on the Norwood Press website provies updates through the current season as well as some additional player information not included in the books.

I am not a huge baseball fan, but I grew up with the Astros. Even without baseball fanaticism, this book was interesting. The glossy pictures, graphics, and visual appeal of the book is enough to keep the pages turning. It contained a lot of basic facts, but even more interesting facts are spaced throughout the book. Did you know a game could be rained out in the Astrodome - a covered stadium? It also has interactive pages that involve map reading and more quirky facts. While it is marketed to young fans, I think older fans like it, too. Highly Recommended.

The updated Team Spirit series by Norwood House Press covers both National and American League teams. The author has added an emphasis on content that will be appreciated by true fans of baseball including a chapter on historical debates surrounding the teams and a look at souvenirs and memorabilia. Readers are also able to explore the history and key players for each team through content that is rich with photographs and graphics. Each book in the series contains the exact same chapters. This feature would make this series a great set of books for introducing students to non-fiction text features. It would also support a class research project.

Arlington Independent School District, July 2012

These are two versions of the same series. One set of books are in English and the other are in Spanish. They are targeted toward grades 3-6. Both versions are focused toward the football, basketball and the baseball teams of major cities. Their excellent information and stories are the fuel for true developing young sports fans. They have large print and an easy flowing format to allow acceptability by reluctant readers. The new English language books for this spring season are focused on baseball and the teams involved in last year’s World Series. They include: The Baltimore Orioles, The Detroit Tigers, The Houston Astros, The Los Angeles Dodgers, The Saint Louis Cardinals, and The Seattle Mariners. The first four Spanish titles for this spring are: Los Heat de Miami, Los Lakers de Los Angeles, Los Mets se Nueva York, and Los White Sox de Chicago. Everything this publisher does is top notch and really achieves its goals. We rated all these five hearts.

Reader: Bob Spear

“The Team Spirit series covers all the teams in the three major professional sports leagues—baseball, football, and basketball. Each book follows the exact same format, and the large print, colorful pictures, maps, time lines, and quotes make for an easy read and offer an eye-catching layout. Fans of the teams will not find much new information as the series is more of a basic introduction. Those with little knowledge of the sport or of the specific team would be well served to peruse these titles. Although most books provide a nice and simple introduction, some material is left out or forgotten. Several Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl titles were not listed on the time line of important team events. Most middle school sports fans will enjoy the series, but even some of these students might find the reading and material too simplistic. The series could also be useful for ESL students or teachers looking for low level/high interest nonfiction.”
