Twelve-year-old Michael Curtis has been in a wheelchair since an accident two years ago and is no longer able to play football and other sports like he used to. Michael watches his twin brother, Tom, play the game and discovers that Tom is doing all the plays Michael has thought he should do. With the help of their neighbor, a retired science professor, the boys refine their ability to communicate through ESP and learn to trade places through TEC, Thought-Energy Control. They each have the opportunity to understand each other’s situation and experience first hand. Michael can run down the field again and Tom can experience life in a wheelchair. Some of the language and description of family interaction is reminiscent of the 1960s, which creates a refreshing tone and presents a model for good family communication. A great book that puts together athletics and important life lessons about walking in others’ shoes.

Children's Literature

Book Buzz, December 2010

The Great Quarterback Switch is a great book for football fans. It starts off with Michael watching his twin brother, Tom, the quarterback make plays for his team. Tom and Michael soon realize that they have some sort of connection like ESP and that they are able to switch minds during a game with a theoretical term called Thought-Energy Control. Michael is excited since he has been in a wheelchair since he was ten years of age. This element in the story makes this book interesting and makes the audience wonder what is going to happen next. Recommended.
