This story is a takeoff on the nursery rhyme of The Cow Jumped Over the Moon. After several failed attempts by the cow to jump over the moon, a raccoon shares a way for the cow to jump over the moon.

As part of the Beginning-to-series, this poetic story could be used in multitude of ways. It can be used to teach about rhyming words, nursery rhymes, reflections, etc. This book makes a great read-a-loud for National Poetry Month in April. Although it is meant for beginning readers, it can also be used for remedial reading using the reading reinforcement activities in the back. I once had a parent complain that I did not have enough beginning readers in our library besides Dr. Suess. If I ever have that complaint again, I am pulling out this book or another one in the series.

Fisher Elementary School

Here is a delightful story in rhyming verse about a cow who longs to jump over the moon, made available to a new generation of beginning readers. Brownie the Cow thinks it would be fun to jump over the moon. Her friends try to discourage her, explaining that she will go “bump” rather than “jump” if she tries such a feat. She tries a few times, anyway. Finally, her friend Raccoon helps her find a way to become the cow that jumped over the moon. Children will enjoy figuring out how the cow accomplishes her goal. Stasiak’s charming illustrations are a wonderful complement to Hillert’s skillful verse, which uses just 124 words. This new edition, part of the “Beginning-to-Read” series, offers an instructional note as well as a word list and activities that will help new readers practice and strengthen reading skills.
