Middle linebacker Jim Nardi catches the football like his hands are lined with Velcro, but as the opponent charges toward him, he freezes and drops the ball. Will he ever get over his fear of being tackled? Jim learns his older brother (and coach of their team) had the same fear when he was Jim's age. When not playing football or doing homework, Jim races model cars with his good friend Charlie Gorman. Charlie has been in a wheelchair since a car accident when he was five, but he is determined to walk again. Will Charlie's determination rub off on Jim and help him overcome his fear? Novice readers who enjoy football will be able to follow play-by-play action as the Vulcans play other teams, sometimes winning, sometimes not. They will identify with Jim and may be able to better deal with their own fears and inadequacies after realizing they are not alone.
Children's Literature Review
Norwood House has produced large-print hardback library versions of the Matt Christopher Sports Library of sports oriented fiction for grades 3-6. This spring’s offerings include Catch That Pass; Center Court Sting; The Kid Who Only Hit Homers; Mountain Bike Mania; Snowboard Showdown; and Soccer Halfback. Each book provides exciting stories with conflicts centered around the different sports that kids love. These are sturdy volumes made to withstand many readings. Each is a fun read that still provides important, values-based food for thought. They are perfect for young reluctant readers. They are “Accelerated Reader” compatible. We rated this excellent series five hearts.
