This is one of the latest volumes in a series on charming tales about a boy and his pet dragon. In this book the two go on a class trip to the local firehouse and learn about what it takes to put out a fire. Common sight words give young readers practice reading. Colorful pictures enhance the story and help young readers expand oral language and develop comprehension. Kindergarten teachers are always looking for books that introduce youngsters to firehouses, particularly before they take a class trip to the local firehouse.

The Dear Dragon series has been around for over 30 years, and this new series of stories continues the formula of providing practice for the early reader. Each book focuses on allowing the reader to practice sight words in a controlled environment. The colorful illustrations support the text and allow the reader to expand on the story. The Dear Dragon series provides an opportunity for the library to support classroom reading instruction for its earliest readers. Recommended.

Dear Dragon accompanies a school group of children on a tour of the firehouse in this very beginning reader ideal for boys and girls. The colorful drawings add to the understanding of the story without the need words. For example, it says "…they put on this and this and this." The pictures on the page show boots, a coat, and a hat. This is a book that is ideal for reading alone, but also invites discussion and extension. It includes a note to caregivers, a word list showing the 76 words used in the story, and reading activities for teachers and parents to use to extend the learning.

Seventy-six pre-primer vocabulary words are used in this simple text introducing what one would see at a firehouse. Two pages in the back of the book suggest activities to reinforce phonemic awareness, phonics, concept words, share reading/CLOZE and comprehension discussions. This is another good addition to the series to be enjoyed by beginning readers and used by teachers. This would also be a good read-aloud prior to a firehouse visit.
