iScience Readers is a leveled reader series that focuses on scientific inquiry and real-life situations. Each book contains student-directed, open-ended questions regarding science concepts that provide opportunity for thought or discussion.
The following features appear in each book in the series.
iScience Puzzle – This puzzle encourages critical thinking skills. Using real-life situations, the puzzle introduces a problem that an understanding of science can help solve. The text takes the reader through science concepts, continually referring to the puzzle while the reader can start to solve the puzzle using reasoning and the process of elimination.
Discover Activity – Contains a hands-on activity that helps the reader connect the puzzle to science by observing science in action.
Solve the iScience Puzzle – After the necessary concepts have been explained, the reader is encouraged to solve the puzzle. If there is more than one way to solve it, the readers decides which solution they would choose.
Beyond the Puzzle – Includes further challenges to reinforce the concepts and stretch the imagination.
Science at Work – A section on careers in science that relate to the book’s topic.
Connecting to History – Relates an interesting historical perspective or milestone in the science topic’s history.

The books starts with a mystery about the sky and ends with its solution. The book is clearly written and illustrated to explain the topic and grabs the interest of the reader. An experiment is included with step-by-step instructions and an explanation of what is shown by the experiment. Glossary, index, and list of other sources are included. This could be used by a teacher to enhance curriculum or as a good resource for students preparing reports.

This book is a member of a series of leveled Science Books called iScience Readers. These books follow a similar organization of information. Open ended questions are sprinkled throughout along with experiment and project ideas. The text is well distributed into the graphics and illustrations. Glossary words are in bold print. Connections are made to history, occupations, and how the reader can become more involved. There is a table of content, glossary, index, and an additional notes page that gives the answer to all the questions throughout the book, which is a really nice succinct feature of the book. I highly recommend this series.
Richmond Public Schools, October 2011

This is a great series for beginning science introduction and study. Books are easy to manage both in size and amount of pages. Each book has a colorful cover wtih a round colorful picture of the subject. Inside it is packed with information with great photographs. Text is 2-3 paragraphs per page. There are additional features highlighting the topic and sub-topic headings. I like the science puzzle at the beginning - almost an ice breaker into the topic. The discovery activity is a great hands on example of the topic. Very nice series for the younger elementary.
